Zara Davis achieves No1 ranking position in Women’s Speed

The UK’s queen of speed has now taken the top spot on the official International Speed Windsurfing Class ranking. Zara who only started Speed sailing in 2005 has slowly clawed her way up the ranking list by consistent performances at international events like the European Championships last year in Ireland.

It is a bitter sweet victory though as the upcoming World Championships at the legendary site of Sotovento has been cancelled due to the recession. Zara said “ It is great to be ranked No 1 in the world but it’s the world championships I was looking forward to, It attracts all the top girls and It would have been great to achieve the World title on a level playing field”

After a very frustrating week wind wise, The result from The ISWC European Championships held in  Dungarvan Ireland was down to the 11th hour, the wind all week was just not enough to race till the final day when a chance came midday, Zara was ready with her New Simmer race sails and Mistral boards and hit the start when the flag when up.

Little did she know the wind was to last only 10 minutes out of a 90 minute round. But she managed to get the two runs in that see needed to take the Women’s 2009 European Speed Crown.

Zara Said” I was very lucky to be ready for the start and got my two runs in, a lot of riders didn’t get the second run in the time, I took my Mistral Slalom 95 and Simmer SC4 7.0m which was a bit big but I wanted to get two safe runs in then change down, but I didn’t get the chance. The site is defiantly got potential with the right wind.”
